The VAL D' HERENS WALKING TOUR has everything even the most experienced hikers could wish for. It covers six stages during which you will discover the spectacular beauty of the Grande Dixence, the world’s highest gravity dam. Or you may prefer a pastoral ride on horseback, in which case there are many bridleways through meadows and larch forests. The more sporting among you will be able to take the steep VIA FERRATA path. But for hikers who are disciples of the adage "MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO", don’t hesitate to follow the many introductory paths and itineraries or travel back in time with the family to our centuries-old irrigation canals. And if all else fails, hundreds of kilometres of footpaths will get you up and moving at a bright pace!

Set out to explore a valley surrounded by ridges and mountain tops, a valley which leaves you with an impression of the infinite, yet at the same time of limits… you’ll find wide open spaces to explore, tightly knit, well-preserved villages, heritage of our ancestors time… Nature is intact here, as are traditions and life on the mountain
pastures. |

• Bus transport from Sion to Thyon and from Nax to Sion at the end of the Tour

The Tour du Val d’Hérens is signposted. However, it also includes paths in the high mountains, therefore mountain equipment and sound hiking
experience are recommended.
From Thyon to Nax, with the possibility of extending your stay in Sion, this tour is made up of five stages, going with the flow along the Val des Dix and the Val d’Hérens, passing by the magnificent Essertes peat bogs and the Grande Dixence dam, the highest concrete gravity dam
in the world. Next you’ll take the ibex path, a
marked educational path, which tells you about the nature and species native to the pasture land upstream of the dam (www.grande-dixence.ch). You will also pass by the Blue Lake, a little piece of paradise in the middle of an arolla pine and larch forest, before
reaching Arolla then Evolène, Les Haudères and La Sage, authentic villages known for their breeding of Hérens cows, a breed famous for their fighting (in the ‘combats de reines’ traditional Valais cow fighting) (www.racedherens.ch). Finally you’ll reach Nax.
